SPCA International The mission of SPCA International is to raise the awareness of the abuse of animals to a global level, to eradicate the euthanasia of healthy and adoptable companion animals and to mount efforts to enhance animal welfare throughout the world.

Pet Rescue

Over 7 million adoptable dogs & cats are killed each year due mainly to
overpopulation! 25-30% of dogs in animal shelters are purebred. The other
70-75% are lovable, wonderful mixed-breed pets, just waiting for a chance to
be your perfect new friend.

In order to help people make good choices when they adopt a dog or cat,
most humane societies, SPCAs and pet rescues provide adoption counseling
to help match the pet for adoption to the prospective new "parent".

If you have your heart set on a specific breed, before you check out a dog or
cat breeder, why not adopt a pet from an animal shelter or dog breed rescue
organization or purebred cat recue? Breed rescues are groups that specialize
in a particular breed of dog or cat.

Animal shelters and pet rescues are not filled with dog or cats that were
discarded because they're "bad". Shelter pets for adoption are wonderful
companions who became the unfortunate victims of family tragedy, unlucky
circumstances, irresponsible owners or pet breeding farms (see Puppy Mills)

Many backyard dog breeders and pet stores who supply the majority of
purebreds simply are selling inbred pets without care for preventing genetic
problems (See Puppy Mills)

Mixed breed pets have less inbreeding, generally less inherited genetic
disease, and therefore overall lower vet bills and happier pets! The best
place to find a mixed breed dog or cat is at an SPCA, a humane society or an
animal shelter.

SPCA International works both independently and together with local
SPCA organizations in all countries.

SPCA International will also provide global information and referral
resource to animal owners and advocates throughout the world who seek a
shelter or wish to adopt a shelter animal, who have questions about
animals, or who wish to join with like-minded animal welfare advocates to
raise awareness and end cruelty to animals.
